Bringing science to society
Valorisation of knowledge means ensuring that knowledge is applied and converted in such a way that it realises its social, economic, or financial potential. The awarding of public financing to scientific research is now, increasingly often, judged on the basis of that research's contribution to society or to the economy; the valorisation of knowledge is considered increasingly important, especially in the case of large-scale subsidy programs.
Valorisation Valorisation can take several forms:
- The training of researchers and medical personnel, therefore providing highly educated people for the work market.
- Increasing accessibility of a knowledge infrastructure (equipment, tools and expertise) which can be used by both businesses and social organisations.
- Transfer of developed knowledge (existent or new) to enterprises and social organisations working, for example, in the area of health care, where its social applications are realised.
Valorising within Utrecht University and UMC Utrecht Why is it important for you, as an employee of the UU or UMC Utrecht, to be involved in the transfer of knowledge? Firstly, it is important to realise that your CAO obliges you to report a potential finding or development, the rights to which are owned by your employer. However, there are also many important benefits for you as an employee. For example:
- Recognition for your discovery or method, for example through means of a patent
- The attention afforded to your work can attract talented colleagues
- Your work contributes to important social developments
- The transfer of knowledge offers the possibility to generate extra income either for you as an individual, or for your research.
